Preparing Sugar Water
Now that we have eight hives, we need to cook up several batches of sugar water as a food supplement for the bees. We are not yet into the peak season of the nectar flow, so this sugar water will help the bees to get a jump start on producing there own honey stores in their new deep hives.
For each batch, we warmed one gallon of water to dissolve two bags of sugar.
Sixteen bags of sugar (four pounds each) makes twelve gallons of sugar water!
Each hive will get about a gallon and a half of sugar water in their top hive feeders, which may last a little more than one week for each hive. We expect that in a couple of weeks, the nectar flow season will be going strong. Tomorrow, we will make the drive to Caldwell to check on our hives.
