Mark and I have planned to place 4 hives on Doug and Linda's property in Caldwell. We researched different types of foundations for the hives and settled on concrete blocks. We have seen other beekeepers use wooden palettes or railroad ties, but the concrete blocks are very inexpensive and more importantly, we think that they are more stable (in regard to weathering) in the long run.
Our hives will be placed on a hill with a small incline, so yesterday we leveled the ground before installing the blocks and we buried the blocks a couple of inches into the ground for stability. The foundations are situated about 8 feet apart. We used 4 blocks for each foundation and positioned them knowing that it is best if the hives face east. The bees will benefit with light and warmth from the morning sun. The hives will be within just a few feet of an established tree line, that will give the bees shade from Texas' hot afternoon sun. Once we receive the hives from Bee Weaver later this month, they will be situated on the blocks, which are forward-sloping and will allow for any rainwater to draw out through the hive entrances.
